Chargers Mock, with One Trade, @JamFed
Let’s have a little fun with a 2025 Chargers mock draft. What if RB Omarion Hampton does fall a little bit, and the Chargers trade up and get him?

2024 NFL Mock Draft (1.0) @JamFed
3/8/2024 – by James Fedewa (@JamFed)
NFL fans are waiting for the 2024 free-agent frenzy to begin, and this draft might make the current quarterback market go CrAzY. Since Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix are six year college starters (a new trend with NIL QB’s), with tons of game experience, this really shoves Penix and Nix into a “faux-veteran” QB status. Paying a rookie is a lot less money than a starting veteran QB in the NFL, so 6 QB’s are drafted in his first round mock draft.
Assuming where the free agent quarterback sign, lets do a bit of guessing (for now):
- Kirk Cousins resigns with the Vikings
- Baker Mayfield resigns with the Buccaneers
- Russell Wilson signs with the Steelers
- Justin Fields gets traded to the Giants (Chicago shops Justin Fields and they get a second rounder / NYG have two 2nd round picks, and extra 2nd for trading away Leonard Williams to Seattle)
- Zach Wilson gets traded from the Jets to Denver
- Drew Lock signs with the Washington Commanders
| Team | Player | Notes |
| 1)Chicago Bears (from Carolina) | Caleb Williams, QB, USC | Caleb Williams is a fantastic QB prospect and Chicago starts a new tenure with another first round rookie QB. Personally, I think Chicago should trade this pick, keep Justin Fields for one more season, and stack up future draft picks. Yes, Fields career stats are not exactly ideal, but young QB’s on bad teams do not exactly have great stats. Willims will probably have similar numbers, until Chicago attracts more talent. |
| 2) Washington Commanders | Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina | Drake Maye is my #2 rated QB in this draft and should flourish as a young NFL quarterback in DC. Washington signs Drew Lock to a $7MM one year deal, and can start for a season, while Maye gets ready for the NFL. Funny how Lock is now a “mentor” – when he’s just a kid himself… |
| 3) New England Patriots | Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU | The Patriots need something different at QB and Daniels is a totally different TYPE of QB New England has ever seen. Mac Jones wasn’t the problem last year either, but he’s also not the solution. New England lacks playmakers so a QB reset is in order. |
| 4) Arizona Cardinals | Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio St | I expect this draft pick to be traded to a QB needy team. But, if AZ does decide to pick, then MHJ is their guy, who is the true #1 prospect in this draft. |
| 5) Los Angeles Chargers | Malik Nabers, WR, LSU | I also expect this draft pick to be traded to a QB needy team. Several mock drafters have a Joe Alt, or Brock Browers chosen here, but I think WR would be the pick. Currently, the Chargers have FIVE quality offensive tackles on their roster, so Alt is not exactly a need. Bowers would be a fantastic pick, if they choose to trade down, but current BPA at #5 would be Nabers. |
| 6)New York Giants | Rome Odunze, WR, Washington | Drafting a quarterback is not an option for their current head coach Brian Daboll (since he is already on the hot seat). Daboll does not have the time to develop a rookie QB, so they will nab Justin Fields as quality backup. However, giving either Daniel Jones or Justin Fields an amazing WR1 with Odunze is setting the current coach and GM up for success. Start Jones, and see if Fields can get on the field. |
| 7)Tennessee Titans | Joe Alt, OL, Notre Dame | Joe Alt has great game tape and fantastic size, but his combine had too many mixed variables. He’s big and strong, with good speed (for his size), but he fell down several times in footwork drills, so he slides a bit. |
| 8) Atlanta Falcons | Michael Penix, QB, Washington | Yes, Michael Penix Jr. is the real deal and will start & flourish game one for the Falcons. His accuracy and arm strength are top tier and I predict he wins OROY (and blows up fantasy football stats). Atlanta is targeting Kirk Cousins, which is fine, but why give Cousins $30MM per year, when you can get better results with Penix, and cost a lot less than Cousins. |
| 9) Chicago Bears | Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia | If Justin Fields had more weapons last season, his stats would be a lot better, and they could keep Fields. But Fields failed and is now gone, so drafting offensive weapons here would help the new QB out immensely. Bowers and Kmet are contrast TE’s, which will only improve their offense. |
| 10) New York Jets | JC Latham, OL, Alabama | Aaron Rodgers needs all the protection he can get, but I could also see the Jets drafting his future replacement (or another WR |
| 11) Minnesota Vikings | Dallas Turner, ER, Alabama | Turner could get drafted as early as #5 and has been a very fast riser since his fantastic combine. |
| 12) Denver Broncos | Byron Murphy, DL, Texas | The Broncos target a “reclamation” QB as a stop-gap season and trade for the Jets Zach Wilson. Many folk feel that a quarterback should be used at this spot (but I do not). They are not ready for a QB, especially considering that Russel Wilson’s dead cap space will hinder this team the next two seasons. Developing a 1st round QB now is too early at this point, so may as well target a slumping and cheap veteran QB. Next year would be a better season to target a young QB, unless Zach Wilson shines… |
| 13) Las Vegas Raiders | JJ McCarthy, QB, Michigan | I’m not exactly sold on JJ McCarty as a first rounder, but he seems to have drawn a lot of interest lately (especially since the Jim Harbaugh statement that JJ should go #1 overall). JJ is going to have to sit for a season, but the Raiders can let their current QB Aidan O’Connell gain more experience. New GM Tom Telesco prefers to draft “character” guys and JJ would be that guy. |
| 14) New Orleans Saints | Amarius Mims, OL, Georgia | Mims is huge. Just pure massiveness. Lean too (just full of crazy huge muscles). He will be a right tackle only, so he’s limited with “fallback” position flexibility, but he’s a freak and freaks get drafted early than expected. |
| 15) Indianapolis Colts | Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama | First DB taken in the draft. Sure, maybe they should go after Brian Thomas from LSU, but IMO, CB1 is better than WR4 (especially in this loaded WR draft). |
| 16) Seattle Seahawks | Bo Nix, QB, Oregon | I can see Seattle drafting D-Line, but they do not have to. They already have DT’s Leonard Williams and Dre’Mont Jones and Jarran Reed. They could go Edge, but they have Boye Mafe, Uchenna Nwosu, Derick Hall and Darrell Taylor. Their D-line is loaded (and IMHO, one of the best on paper). OG and C are certainly a possibility with this pick, but they can get those later. Plus, Bo Nix is better than draft-fans think. He has first round talent written all over him. Sure, he checks down a lot, but that would be just fine checking down to this RB and WR roster. Nix is a perfect match of this offense. |
| 17) Jacksonville Jaguars | Brian Thomas, WR, LSU | Several folk mock draft a CB to the Jags this spot, which is fine (and probable). However, Brian Thomas is big and fast and could be true WR1. |
| 18) Cincinnati Bengals | Taliese Fuaga, OL, Oregon St | Fuaga is a fantastic RT prospect and could probably play every OL position. Cincy needs OL help, this is BPA and a need. |
| 19) Los Angeles Rams | Jared Verse, ER, Florida St | If LA is offering two first round picks for Brian Burns, then obviously DE is a primary need. |
| 20) Pittsburgh Steelers | Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo | Mitchell might be the best DB in this draft, but played in the MAC (so he slides just a bit). |
| 21) Miami Dolphins | Olu Fashanu, OL, Penn St | Rumor has it that their current Left Tackle, Terron Armstead, could retire. |
| 22) Philadelphia Eagles | Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson | A bit skinny but lightning fast. Philly need a CB more than anything and will start day one. |
| 23) Houston Texans | Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa | BPA- Houston could get another WR or DE, but DeJean is a freak (and could get drafted quite a bit earlier) |
| 24) Dallas Cowboys | Tyler Guyton, OL, Oklahoma | Your brand new starting left tackle. |
| 25) Green Bay Packers | Jackson Powers-Johnson, OL, Oregon | Green Bay could go many directions with this pick, but quality O-Linemen seem to be their favorite to draft. Best Center (or OG) in the draft. |
| 26) Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Laiatu Latu, ER, UCLA | Latu could go in the TEENS, but medical cautions have him slipping just a bit. |
| 27) Arizona Cardinals | Chop Robinson, ER, Penn St | Freaky combine shoves him up the board. What a fantastic find for AZ. |
| 28) Buffalo Bills | Kool Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama | They just dumped nearly their whole defensive secondary. They need talented bodies. |
| 29) Detroit Lions | JerZhan Newton, DL, Illinois | Johnny Newton does slide a bit in this draft, because of an injury, but he’s still a top tier talent |
| 30) Baltimore Ravens | Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia | BPA, other than WR, right? They need WR’s, but not in the first round (unless Brian Thomas falls here). OL would be a good selection here too. |
| 31) San Francisco 49ers | Troy Fautanu, OL, Washington | RG and RT are huge needs |
| 32) Kansas City Chiefs | Xavier Worthy, WR, Texas | The rich get richer. Damn, they seem to draft guys that are perfect fits and fall right to them. |

The NFC West Los Angeles Changers ?
By James Fedewa – 2/19/2015
The Chargers and Raiders announced a possible joint-venture today, mutually perusing a $1.7 billion stadium option in Carson, California. A “super” stadium / mega-complex that both teams could call their home. Initial football fan thoughts have been very negative, regarding two divisional rivals, that share a mutual hate for each other, splitting the same home field. But moving one of those two teams to the NFC West makes this move a very interesting scenario and discussion, which could be a very smart business move for the Raiders, Chargers and the NFL.
If you are a Chargers fan, your biggest rival are the Raiders. Same applies with the Broncos and the Chiefs, who call the Raiders their largest Rival. 75% of the AFC West hate the Raiders the most, which is outstanding, considering the Raiders that have been the worst team in the NFL over the last ten years. Yet the Raiders are still the largest rival and most hated team in the AFC West.
In contrast, the mere words “San Diego” generally makes people smile. The beach, the warm weather, the lifestyle, the fun… it’s a vacation city. If the Chargers dropped their team name and just went with their city name, the team would still have a large fan base. Would you be a fan of The San Diego’s? YES! Granted, a city does not necessary make a team (but it could in San Diego). Other than the actual team, what creates and generates an overall team? THE FANS. Chargers fans are generally a very nice bunch, which makes it easy, fun (and some what mild) to root for the Chargers.
So which team would join the NFC West? The Raiders or The Chargers?
Could the Raiders sell out a stadium in Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle or St. Louis? Probably (San Francisco for sure because of the Bay Area Oakland fans, but one of those city will be moved to the AFC West).
Could the Chargers sell out a stadium in Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle or St. Louis? This is debatable, but probable. San Diego fans could travel to Phoenix and San Francisco fairly easy, and Seattle is an old rival from when they were in the AFC West. If any teams FANS would be more accepting of a team moving cities, it will be a mild (and loyal) Chargers fan. Losing the Raiders, Chiefs and Broncos rivalry would be devastating for those Charges fans though, but Chargers fans might like a mix up (like Seattle did not too long ago)…
To keep the most rivalries in the AFC West, the Raiders would be the logical team to stay in the AFC West, but which team leave the NFC West? St. Louis Rams? And that’s another debatable geographical oddity for the NFL. Best case scenario for the real fans and the NFL to leave everything alone and move the St. Louis Rams to Carson instead. (sorry St. Louis fans, L.A. is the real home for the Rams)
Chargers Top Three Free Agents: King Dunlap, Brandon Flowers & Ryan Mathews
2/17/15 – by James Fedewa
The 2014 season is finally over and what a long and tortuous NFL season it was. The Chargers had their ups and their downs with some very good pinnacles. Overall it was a great season and it felt good to be a fan. Just missing the playoffs, with a “win you are in” scenario on the last game of the season was epic, but it just didn’t quite finish like Chargers fans wanted it too, but lets move on an look forward to the new (and next) offseason. Full 3 Round NFL Mock Draft (4.0)
5/7/2014 – by James Fedewa
The final mock draft of the season is finally upon us. My mock drafts usually jump around, exposing alternative team views and opinions to each team need. I do listen, recognize and reply to your comments and I incorporate what fans recommend (or insist) as everything is debatable, yet nothing is for certain in the NFL Draft.

2013 NFL Mock Draft (pre-free agency) by James Fedewa
The NFL off season leaves most football fans with a lonely void of the GOT NO FOOTBALL BLUES. We miss our game, our team and wonder and speculate how we fans can improve our beloved team. With trade rumors, gossip, opinions and speculations flinging across fan-websites & news papers, with no real news reported (other than salary cap cuts and the Alex Smith unofficial trade), no real player interviews are worth watching. So fan cling to the next best thing: the NFL Scouting Combine followed by hundreds of MOCK DRAFTS. I’m an NFL fan, and my favorite team has its share(s) of number ONE overall picks (along with with the worst record in the league), so mock-drafts have been part of my football fan career. I’m a fixer and an idea-man, so I want to figure out the details of how to improve my favorite team (and all of their opponents). Routinely for the last 19 years, I annually guesstimate WHO is going where, what college phenom can help this team and how can you improve all teams. So if you’re dream job is a General Manage of an NFL Team (which is mine dream job), I MOCK DRAFT every teams need as if I’m the General Manager OF THE WORLD (well, not really). The NFL Franchise Tags have been set, so here’s my VERSION ONE of my 2013 NFL Mock Draft:

Rookie Left Tackles vs. Free Agent Left Tackles (2013 San Diego Chargers)
Quality starting left tackles in the NFL are very difficult to find, especially at a reasonable rate. San Diego found a keeper in 2011 in Jared Gaither, but Gaither failed miserably in 2012, crippled by back spasms & injuries. If Chargers new GM Tom Telesco and Head Coach Mike McCoy do stick with Gaither in 2013, they’re going to have to find a quality backup left tackle. And if this “quality backup left tackle” is forced to start a lot of games, he better have some experience too.
Rookie left tackles do not normally excel their first year, unless they’re top tier first round talents (like LT prospects Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher). Those two should do well day one. By the time San Diego picks in the first round, number 11 overall, both top tier left tackles will probably be gone, leaving Lane Johnson as the next top LT draft prospect. Johnson has tremendous upside, but he’s only started one season as a starting left tackle, and if he had to backup Gaither, he could be starting more games at left tackle than he has college experience at left tackle. It could be very overwhelming for Johnson as full time starter/protector of Philip Rivers blind side, but that’s only a guess.
If Telesco and McCoy decide to roll the dice on Lane Johnson in the first round, Chargers fans could possibly see Rivers playing the same as 2011 and 2012 (which was poor). Johnson could excel as a starter, but he’ll need some grooming, at least another half a season learning the NFL position. In that case, I don’t think the Chargers draft Lane Johnson with the 11th overall pick.
Left Guard is another first round possibility but interior linemen are not likely taken within the first third of the first round. O-guard Chance Warmack has tremendous upside in this year’s draft and could be that power pro bowl left guard San Diego really needs, but O tackles should be more coveted in first round. Cornerback would feel the safest pick with #11 (if Cason or Jammer are not brought back), but that’s the way former GM AJ Smith’s drafting philosophy was (as Smith drafted several 1st & 2nd round cornerbacks). The Chargers could be looking for more young pass-rushers too, as outside linebackers Shaun Phillips and Antwon Barns may not return either.
San Diego has several holes to fill on their 2013 roster, and whoever the Chargers draft with their first round pick should be a starter, not a project that can possibly start in 2014. Biggest need (by far) is a new left tackle, but WHO? Since Fisher or Joeckel will probably not be available (with pick 11), SD should pick up a cheap free agent backup left tackle that could start of Gaither has another injury plagued year.
Where will the Free Agent Left Tackles go?
• Jake Long = He’ll demand a lot money & a big/long contract ($10MM per year). I can see him going somewhere that is a winner, for a slight discount. Prediction: Colts (or Packers)
• Branden Albert = KC would love to keep him, but since they have the first pick in the draft, and there are no #1 overall QB’s worthy of that overall pick, they’ll select LT Luke Joeckel (for 75% less of what Albert will demand on the open market). Albert will go to a team you would expect either. Prediction: Titans (or NY Giants)
• Sebastian Vollmer = this guy is good and versatile, which will give him a bunch of money and a big contract (perfect for his current coach). He’s currently a right tackle, but he can play left tackle just as well. New England shouldn’t let him go, but he may demand too much money for New England to match. I can see an inter-divional rival throwing big money at Vollmer, but I’d like to see him as a Charger. Prediction = Dolphins (or Patriots).
• Jermon Bushrod = He’s looking for a big payday, just like his ole’ guard buddies Nicks, Grubs & Evens. But he won’t find it because he’s not that great. He will get a decent offer though, and I’d suggest from his current team. Prediction: New Orleans (or San Diego, as he can play both LT and RT)
• Bryant McKinnie = He’ll stay in Baltimore (for cheap too, but still he’s a stop-gap)
• Sam Baker = has left tackle ability, but he’s only had ONE good year. He should stay right where he’s at. Prediction: Atlanta (or SD if they can get him on the cheap)
Who would you like to see as the Chargers starting left tackle in 2013?
How would you project the Chargers starting offensive line?
LT / LG / C / RG / RT
Guys to Get / Filling Chargers Holes in 2013
The Chargers have so many holes to fill, plus multiple free agents possibly leaving in 2013. Multiple offensive guards are free agents, multiple corner backs are free agents, multiple running backs are free agents… New General Manager Tom Telesco may keep a few San Diego free agents but they all were previous GM AJ Smith’s guys, and AJ (and Norv) are gone, fired, kaput…
So, if I could have ONE game changing Free Agent is San Diego for 2013, who would it be? Umm…. Hmmm…
I’m… not…. sure… I don’t really love ANY of them. Sure, there are some quality football players GM Teleco can nab, but most of these “impact” free agents are going to demand a TON of cash, and I don’t see anyone really worth $10 million a year (so, sorry Jake Long). Can San Diego get Vincent Jackson back? Ehhh… not concerned about that rich guy anymore, since WR Danario Alexander looked just like him (and Vincent Brown is coming back from injury).
So, I don’t have ONE free agent WANT or NEED, but I do like three smaller free agent football players. Not franchise game changers (yet), but good football players…
I’d like San Diego to get:
ILB, Leroy Hill, SEA – Spikes is old, and he ended his Chargers career in bad fashion with a temper tantrum vs. Oakland. Hill is a quality linebacker, big hitter, and very intimidating. He reminds me of an ILB Foley. I really like him (AS A FOOTBALL PLAYER) but he just got in trouble with domestic abuse problems, but that shouldn’t matter. IMO, he’s a perfect fit with Donald Butler as an ILB’s the 3-4 defense. I’m rooting for Mouton, and I hope he excels, but that’s an AJ Smith guy too, and he just couldn’t get playing time from Pagano.
LG: Andy Levitre, BUF, He’s a sturdy Californian and blue collar worker, plus started every game in his 4 year carrer. He’s a boardeline pro bowler though, and may get a lot of CASH!!! Get this guy, keep Tyrone Green (but move T.Green to CENTER).
CB: Tracy Porter, DEN: If he can stay healthy, I like the way he plays. But he had some injuries last season but when he played he played well. SD rarely brings in quality free agent CB’s but Telesco may… Especially with Denver’s secondary coach now in SD. SD has two quality young corners that can start, but SD really needs a younger vet to help the kids, in case of injury. Marcus Gilchrist and Shareece Wright should excel (and start) in 2013, but Gilchrist plays very well as a nickel corner.
We all know that the O-Line is San Diego’s biggest problem. Keep Gaither (for 1 more year. He’s nervous and back injuries really do SUCK! – Plus Cheap LT’s are so hard to find) Draft a LT with the 1st round pick for insurance though. Keep Clary and Mike Harris,. Dump Hartwick & Vazquez (both cannot run block and have failed over the last 4 years combined)…
